Abu Simbel lies in a starkly desolate area, 280 km south of Aswan. Here
Ramses II built magnificent temples, the grandest and most complete
example of ancient Egyptian architecture. The larger temples is
dedicated to Re Harakte, Amon and the deified Ramses II himself; the
smaller temple, devoted to Hathor of Moshek, was built for Queen
Nefertari. Due to the rising waters of Lake Nasser, the two great
temples of Abu Simbel were actually moved from their foundations to
higher ground some 200 meters away, in order to preserve these
historical monuments. The Great Temple of Abu Simbel is Ramses ll's
masterpiece. The seated Colossi of Ramses, four 20 metres statues of
the king, at the front of the Great Temple, are memorable for their
serenity as well as their mammoth proportions. In the inner sanctum
of the temple statues depict Ramses and the Gods Ramhuratehti, Amon
and Btah. On February 22 and October 22 of each year (February 21
was Ramses' birthday and October 21 his coronation day, however,
with the moving of the temples, the timing was shifted by a day),
when the first rays of the sun reach 100 metres into the temple, the
statues are bathed in light. At the smaller temple devoted to
Hathor, constructed for Queen Nefertari, six 10 metre standing
statues of King Ramses and Queen Nefertari adorn the facade. The
temples, built originally to impress the Nubians with the power and
glory of the New Kingdom, continue to cast their spell on visitors
to this day. |

in Egypt, 16 km/10 mi south of Cairo, with 20 pyramids. The oldest
of these (third dynasty) is the 'Step Pyramid' designed by Imhotep
whose own tomb here was the nucleus of the Aesklepieion, a centre of
healing in the ancient world. Imhotep
was an egyptian physician and architect, adviser to King Zoser (3rd
dynasty). He is thought to have designed the step pyramid at Sakkara,
and his tomb (believed to be in the north Sakkara cemetery) became a
centre of healing. He was deified as the son of Ptah
and was identified with Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine. |
